Toques to T-Shirts Can Cause Mould

Manitoba weather is always a topic of conversation and amazement at how it can be -30 one day and +5 the next. This winter seems to be bringing quite a few of these extreme weather fluctuations. While we all revel in the joy of walking outside without freezing off an extremity, that warm wind coming in can also bring headaches for your home or business.

Most “Winterpeggers” have heard of ice dams. When the weather outside is not frightful, the sun heats up the snow on your roof and as the sun starts to set, this causes the snow to pool up in the gutters. The end result is ice forming at the edge of a roof, preventing melting snow from draining down the eavestroughs. The trapped water can then leak into the home and cause damage to walls, floors, ceilings and insulation. Some of this may not be visible to the human eye.

Why does an ice dam cause mould? Water and moisture in the home. Mould thrives on moisture and our homes are made of all the materials it needs to feed on in order to grow. Combine that with the nice and toasty warmth our homes offer, the moisture, materials and heat provide the perfect trifecta of mould comfort.  Mould will continue to flourish in this environment and eventually compromise the structural integrity, not to mention the health of the dwellers.

Prevention Tips:

  1. Ensure your attic is ventilated properly. Everyday activities such as cooking, showering and laundry result in more moisture and warmth being generated.
  2. Check your eaves and ensure there is no debris blocking them.
  3. Make sure all your vents (bathroom, kitchen, dryer) are vented outside properly.

How to Check for Issues:

  1. Check your attic for visual signs of mould.
  2. Look around your ceilings and floors for signs of moisture.
  3. Check your humidity levels. If they are over 65%, it is a clear indication of an issue.
  4. Use your nose. Mould has a musty odor and can lead you to the problem.
